budget advice via skype

A SHROPSHIRE and POWYS accountant is offering free advice sessions via Skype to help those living in remote rural communities who are concerned about the new budget changes.

Rob Ellis, Managing Partner of Welch and Ellis, which is based in Willow Street, Oswestry is offering free sessions to anyone who is interested, but is particularly keen to help those who live in remote and rural communities, or who may find it difficult to find time to visit an accountant for brief advice due to family or work commitments or health issues.

The son of farmers, Rob, 40 who lives in Llanfechain, Powys with his wife and 14-month-old son, already visits a lot of his clients at home if they prefer. But he feels in such a rural community there is a definite need for short, free advice sessions so people can get clarity on changes in the budget, advice on starting a new business or even ask some basic tax questions.

Rob said: "I love Powys and Shropshire, it is a beautiful part of the world, but we also know there are some remote places and the road network is not always the best. So as long as people are happy to embrace Skype, we can still have a face-to-face meeting and I can offer some initial advice without them having to take a huge amount of time out of their day.

“I know a lot of people often put off asking for advice as they are so busy they don’t even feel they have the time to look for an accountant. This is a way I can point people in the right direction without them having to feel beholden, as it may be there is nothing they need to or can do.

“Equally, I hope the sessions will help to give something back to the local community I love and may help who need some clarification, advice or who simply want aspects of the budget or anything else tax related explained to them.

The first Skype advice sessions will take place between 11am and noon, and 7pm and 8pm on Friday 17 March and Saturday 18 March. 20-minute slots can be booked in advance and are free. For those who struggle with good broadband, as many do in Powys, Rob is also happy to provide advice over the phone.

Rob said: “I am offering day time, evening as well as weekday and weekend slots as I know how hard it can be to juggle work and family life. I am always keen to make things easier for people if I can.”

"There are already so many things many people are not aware of prior to the budget, like the tax changes to buy-to-let properties. With all the information that comes out, it can be difficult for people to keep up. In a 20 minute session I should be able to give people an idea if there is anything they should be aware of and also help those wanting to start from scratch with, for example, a new business idea.”
