Rob Ellis – Managing Partner

Rob Ellis - Managing Partner

After cutting his teeth in London, Rob moved to Devon where he worked for several medium sized firms and went on to qualify as an independent financial adviser before returning to his family home on the Shropshire/Powys borders in 2014. He also has a base in Belsize Park, North London which was established in 2020 after he started to take on more London based clients.

He regularly deals with a number of tax jurisdictions from USA, Ireland and Romania and whilst in London worked extensively with partner offices in Rome and Barcelona. However, he is well placed to offer advice on a wide range of countries and has a special interest in Europe and America, where many of his clients own holiday property.

He still visits Devon and Somerset on a regular basis to offer consultancy services to Welch & Co accountants in Taunton.

When he is not in London, Rob lives on a farm in Powys with his wife Jo and son Samuel and a menagerie of animals including numerous horses and dogs.

To relax he enjoys watching good films, playing bad golf and eating and drinking the best that Shropshire and Powys has to offer. He also has an interest in a race horse and supports Welsh Rugby both of which have had winning and losing streaks. He lost his hair at 18 and is keen to stress it (probably) had nothing to do with dealing with HMRC on a daily basis.

Examples of innovative tax planning:

  • Setting up a UK agency company through an Isle of Man trust
  • Liaising with a client and Financial Adviser to ensure that they weren’t overtaxed when emigrating to New Zealand
  • IHT planning using an LLP to protect an inheritance tax charge on a rental property portfolio
  • Use of IIP trust to take advantage of capital tax changes before the budget change
